Somali Peace and Development

Our WASH initiative involves improving access to water and sanitation and promote improved hygiene behaviors for positive impacts on health and development. As a means of improving the health of children and contributing to a clean and healthy learning environment.

As clean water, basic toilets and good hygiene practices are essential for the survival and development of children and without these basic needs, the lives of millions of children are at risk. We understand that for children under five, water- and sanitation-related diseases are one of the leading causes of death. Every day, children die from preventable diseases caused by poor water, and a lack of sanitation and hygiene.

SOMPAD is working tirelessly to ensure that the Somalis haveĀ  Access to safe water and better sanitation practices as priority issues for improving the health of people living in Somalia through water trucking, drilling boreholes, Installing taps in schools, and providing water treatment services.

Since Water is a critical resource that is in short supply, most traditional water sources in Somalia are overused and unprotected thus Poor quality of water contributes to the high rates of malnutrition in Somalia.

Over half the population lives without sanitary facilities or means of waste disposal, the effects of which are most noticeable in urban environments. SOMPAD partners with Donors to help address the situation with the aim of improving the quantity and quality of water and sanitation facilities through innovative approaches that focus on availability, access, and usage.

Chronic malnutrition rates in Somalia rank among the highest in the world. Infant and maternal mortality are equally alarming, SOMPAD supports projects that assist moderate and severely malnourished children, promote mother and child health, in-patient care, and outreach programmes.

This is due to the fact that War casualties continue to be on the rise in Somalia, causing both disability and death. Health services must be brought closer to those who most need them.
